DOT have designed the permanent exhibition at the Norsey Wood Interpretation Centre. Norsey Wood, near Billericay in Essex is a designated ancient monument and Site of Scientific Interest, one of the few remaining examples of ancient managed woodland left in the UK. The Interpretation Centre features themed permanent displays along with fun and engaging low-tech interactive exhibits to help the 60,000 plus people who visit the Wood each year understand more about its heritage and biodiversity and about the sustainable management of the Wood. Working closely with educational consultant Jane Frederick and the rangers at the Wood, DOT have produced a bold, informative and flexible exhibition. Permanent displays front a series of semi-transparent photographic floor to ceiling backdrops, combining to transform an awkward and uninviting space into a warm and welcoming orientation point for visitors that feels like a natural extension of the Wood itself. A giant photographic screen spans the whole wall at one end of the centre, highlighting Norsey’s place as one of the best sites for bluebells in the world. The screen can be rolled away so that the room can be opened up into larger space for special events. A series of low-tech physical interactives – lift-the-flap panels, a zoetrope and an interactive flip book that lets you create fantastic creatures and stories combining the heads, tails and bodies of ordinary animals – provide a tactile and entertaining exploration of different aspects of day to day life in Norsey Wood.
