During the over-exuberance of the dotcom boom you could buy ex-Russian army tanks online and have them delivered directly to your home for the price of a small country estate in Scotland.
Of course, that company isn't around any more (it wasn't actually ever around, but you get the idea...)
Many optimistic people took their business online in the vain hope that their web site would be the big break they'd been waiting for, but most of these as we all know ended in tears when the revenues didn't balance the dotcom lifestyles, the dividends and the running costs.
Our own ventures into eCommerce have been equally off the wall, including one site where you could buy organic cotton underpants.
Two other aspiring dot.com clients came to us with reassuringly ambitious ideas. Brewers (the UK's largest chain of independently-run home decorating stores) wanted to sell wallcoverings online, and The Big Laundry wanted a web site where people could do their laundry.
Bearing in mind that when you buy wallpaper, you might actually like to see it first, we got together with Brewers and between us came up with wallpaperdirect, the UKs most popular online wallpaper store. Free samples and free delivery, virtual roomsets where you can see the paper on the wall before you buy, shortlists to help you choose with a friend, a supplier-administered back end and the world's friendliest shopping basket mean wallpaperdirect makes money.
And The Big Laundry does it in spades. Londoners registered for the fantastic door-to-door laundry service can schedule regular pick-ups, register special requests and manage their account details and history. On the back end, The Big Laundry can manage their products and customers and schedule their deliveries all in one easy interface.
Get the product right, make it easy to find, easy to buy and easy to maintain. You never know, maybe we can help you get the tills rattling.
